“Holding one up to the light, I marveled at how lovely it looked, perfectly round, rosy and slightly translucent. I caught a whiff of its fragrant, sweet scent before popping it into my mouth…it was a sweet burst of flavor, unlike anything I’d eaten before!”

This week’s plant has become a favorite of mine in the garden. Jamaican Cherry (Muntingia calabura), also known as the Cotton Candy Fruit tree, produces berries with a unique flavor. The fruit is so delicious it was spread by humans around the warmer areas of the world quickly!

The sweeping limbs of the Jamaican Cherry tree are as unique as its mystical allure. There aren’t many tales regarding its energetic use, but it seems to support the Element of Air quite strongly. Abundance and protection are provided by the Muntingia, from bark to berry!

Shown in studies to have “remarkable medicinal value”, the Muntingia has been used for ages to help relieve ailments. Various aids can be made by processing the leaves or bark, and the berries are super beneficial to the digestive system even when eaten fresh off the tree!

Jamaican Cherry trees love to grow in Central Florida! It is the only member of its genus and an extremely fast growing plant. Our own tree (shown) grew over 14 feet in one year! Once established, it is hardy and fruits most of the year. It has a spreading canopy, so give it room!

Muntingia is known in Sri Lanka as the Jam Fruit Tree. Being so well known for its hardiness, the tree stood as a metaphorical reference to a family of fictional Burghers. Based loosely on the author's personal experience, this tale incorporates humor and lore seamlessly.

There are many delightful ways to enjoy this unique tasting fruit, and this salad really allows it to shine. Jamaican Cherries with these ingredients create a sweet, savory, and fresh salad with lots of texture. If you can’t find piper lolot, spinach or grape leaves are a good alternative!
